Some say 'YUMMY' - I say 'Yucky'
Sept. 30, 2008. Found along the Red Sandstone Trail by the Sugar Island Dam. Town of Potsdam, NY Shaggy Mane Mushrooms are Inky Caps and as such they dissolve into a black inky goo as they age. Young fresh specimens are supposed to be one of the best edible mushrooms found. The season ranges from late summer to fall in northern areas. These are usually found in open areas, on disturbed ground, grassy areas and hardpacked soil. As fragile as this is it has the ability to actually push it's way through asphalt.
EDIBLE: Choice - Just make sure you pick fresh ones with the gills still white.
