Spotted Joe-Pye-Weed

Eupatorium maculatum

Found in wet low ground often in large colonies. Spotted Joe-Pye-Weed is similar to Sweet Joe-Pye-Weed (Eupatorium purpureum) but has dark purple stems or purple spots on green stems without the whiteish look of the sweet variety. Flower clusters are more flat topped than the sweet's 'domed' look. Sweet Joe-Pye-weed usually has 3 or 4 leaves in whorls while Spotted Joe-Pye-Weed has 4 or 5.

These plants found their own way into my pond garden. They make a great addition even though the Tiger Lilies blooming at the same time grab most of the attention.
